Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Your shoulder is the most flexible joint in your body. It allows you to place and rotate your arm in many positions in front, above, to the side, and behind your body. This flexibility also makes your shoulder susceptible to instability and injury.

  • Total shoulder replacement, both sholders

“My left shoulder was hurt in 1991 when I was on crutches and was very painful to a magnitude of 10 most of the time. My right shoulder was damaged with arthritis, so bad that use of both my arms was strongly restricted. At Grossmont Orthopaedic I met Dr. DuBois, and subsequently, in 2004 he replaced my right shoulder. The process, hospitalization, surgery, pain management, physical therapy was exceptional. Six months later, Dr. DuBois performed the replacement on my left shoulder which needed the surgery much more than the right one. The process was surprisingly painless from the beginning. The care and support was exceptional. I have had on many occasions to refer people who have had shoulder problems to Dr. DuBois because of his unique surgery style and his after care. Now in this year of 2012, I have complete use and range of both my arms to the extent that I have normal usage with both and no pain at all. May all who need this surgeon's talents feel free to use what he has to offer. I have been blessed by it.

  • Left and right shoulder replacement

“I've had both shoulders replaced due to arthritis. Dr. Dubois and staff were kind, caring and my recovery went very well, with little or no discomfort.

These surgeries have truly changed my life, and to anyone who is facing this surgery, but putting it off, do it, you won't be sorry! Thanks Dr. DuBois.”

  • Arthroscopic Bankart Repair

“I dislocated my shoulder years ago and have been dealing with it partially dislocating for years. Last november it dislocated to full lock and I was finally forced to talk to a doctor about it. I met with Dr. DuBois and he provided me with several options, and his own recommendation. He was very friendly, took his time to explain all my options, and answered all my questions. I chose to have the bankart repair surgery done and I'm really glad I did. Dr. DuBois gave me the run down of the surgery and was very helpful and friendly through the entire event. After the surgery he and his team provided all the necessary information and care I needed. Today my shoulder feels as good as it did before my first dislocation. It feels more stable than it has ever been and I have no pain at all. I couldn't be happier with Dr. DuBois and I highly recommend him and his team! Thank you so much!”

  • Shoulder and rotator repair

“I'm 52 years old and started having problems on both my shoulders several years ago but just ignored the problem. I finally went to see Dr. DuBois in July of 2011. He was very good at explaining to me the situation and my options. There was no pressure what so ever from him on what I should do. I made the decision to have surgery on both of my shoulders. Dr. DuBois explained to me what to expect concerning the operations. I had my left shoulder done first and then three months later I had my right shoulder worked on. In both cases, the surgery staff was great. They helped put any concerns to rest and did all they could to make me feel comfortable before surgery and in recovery.

The overall experience was beyond what I would have expected. In a day and age when it seems like everything is impersonal and some are just in it for the money, Dr. DuBois and his staff exhibited a lost virtue: that of genuine concern and wanting to help others. They truly care about the individual and their needs. When I needed assistance with getting information for my work, they made the time to help me out right then and not put me off. When I needed a change in my medication, they took care of it on the spot. When I would come into the office I noticed that they greeted every person with a smile and concern about their situation. This went a long way in making me feel comfortable and at ease.

My shoulders are both recovering quicker than anticipated and I am feeling much better than before the surgery. I credit Dr. DuBois for helping me to improve the quality of my life and giving me back what I did not realize over time what I had lost prior to surgery. Thank you Dr. DuBois and staff.”

  • Total Shoulder Reverse
Tom H.'s photo

“Three years ago when I first met Dr. DuBois I could not raise my right arm above my chest, and that was with extreme pain. He explained to me what had happened with my completely separated rotator cuff and that there was a procedure to repair it. The operation went exactly as he had described it to me, the recovery time and therapy went by very quickly and I do not remember being in very much pain, certainly not after the first few days. I would say that I have regained 99% of the use of my right arm since the operation. I never experience any pain in my right shoulder and I sometimes have to remind myself that I had the surgery. Dr. DuBois is one of the very highest level of professional people that I have met, but he is also extremely cordial and personable. Thank You Dr. DuBois, and all of your staff. Tom”

  • Right Reverse Total Shoulder

“I came to Dr Dubois for a second opinion on my right shoulder. I had a total shoulder replacement done by another surgeon in 2007. I had a second surgery as I had problems with the first surgery and then problems with the second surgery. Feeling that the shoulder was not right I came to Dr Dubois' office through a series of referrals in 2009. Dr Dubois did a revision to a reverse total shoulder. While my shoulder is not good as new I still have almost maximum use of my shoulder thanks to Dr Dubois. He was on target with his assessment. I had great care from Dr Dubois all the way from his staff and surgery team and the health care people at Grossmont Hospital. Thank you Dr Dubois. Dennis R”

  • Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement

“I am a 64 year-old Criminal Defense Attorney, practicing primarily in San Diego County, in State and Federal Courts, for 39 years.

In December, 2010, I re-injured my right shoulder which I had originally injured playing volleyball in college decades before. As a result, I developed a frozen shoulder, also known as pseudo-paralysis in that shoulder, rendering it essentially useless.

On December 28, 2011, Dr. DuBois performed a reverse total shoulder replacement on me, a procedure involving the replacement of the entire shoulder, including the socket. After 6 weeks in a sling, I had no pain, and almost full range of motion without any physical therapy. The transformation was nothing short of miraculous.

Anyone suffering from shoulder difficulties could not do better then to have Dr. DuBois as his surgeon. He is truly phenomenal at what he does.

Sincerely, Michael M”

  • left shoulder replacement

“My shoulder injury accured in May of 1971. I was attempting to slide into home plate, the attempt was stopped abruptly by a 250lb catcher. Not only did I dislocate my shoulder I was called out on the play. In the last 37 years I underwent 3 surgeries and numerous cortisone injections. Now I was left with a shoulder full of arthritis. At the time I was seeing an excellent orthopedic surgeon who said to me you need to see a "shoulder guy" and I know the best one, Dr. DuBois. Dr. DuBois replaced my left shoulder on 5/5/09. It has been a complete success. I believe Dr. DuBois to be a sincere positive and genuine guy. He is exceptional at explaining your present condition, what he plans to do to correct it, and what kind of results you can look forward to. You sense the confidence he has in his own abilities. His staff is a extension of himself so your needs are taken care of promptly, courteously, and professionally. If you need surgery you need to look no further.

“I am a 62 yr.old rt. handed woman. When I was 20 I first injured my rt. shoulder. I was told by my dr. that it was all in my mind, so it was left untreated. I live a pretty active life and have had numerous injuries since then. Drs have told me that I am just trying to get drugs, that its all in my mind or that I just have to live with it. I was to the point that the elbow couldn't move more than a few inches from my body. In 2009 I finally found Dr. DuBois. He explained the problem to me and although I was hesitant at first, he gave me the information and instuction I needed and I had the surgery. There was very little pain and I am very pleased with the results. My pain now is minimal and I have almost total movement of the arm. I can swim (overhand) and even adjust the mirrior in the car! I can reach things on the top shelf and comb my hair with my right hand. It's great. Thank you Dr.!”

“I am 47 years old and I am still very active. I surf, skate, scuba and ski. I have had chronic shoulder dislocation problems for years.

I had a bad accident in the desert and dislocated it bad and could not put it back in this time. With another surgeon I had a surgery and he said my shoulder was a mess, closed me back up and said he could not do anything. I thought all my activites were over forever but wait!

So I went to Dr Benjamin DuBois and what a life saver. I am six week out of surgery and feel like a million dollars.

I have my life back hoping to be back to work soon.

  • Shoulder Revision
Tim S.'s photo

“I am an active 75-year old male who had a revision surgery of my right shoulder by Dr. DuBois to repair a failure of an original total replacement that was done 7 years earlier by another local orthopedic surgeon. I had experienced on going problems with the shoulder after the original surgery right up to the time I had the revision procedure. Earlier on, I had considered having the original surgeon reopen the shoulder to check it out. My concerns, however, caused me to decide against it so I chose to just live with the problem and take a lot of anti-inflammatory medication. Eventually, my right arm and shoulder did become so weak and painful that I decided to search out another shoulder specialist to determine what alternatives might exist. That was when I discovered Dr. DuBois.

Right from the beginning, Dr. DuBois was very understanding of my concerns about having another major surgery on my shoulder so he proposed a step by step evaluation beginning with X-rays, followed by an ultra-sound and then a CT-Scan, the latter of which indicated definite abnormalities but no clear definition of what was wrong. Again, because of my hesitancy to go through another replacement surgery and the hopefulness that it was something that might be corrected arthroscopically, Dr. DuBois agreed to do an arthroscopy to get a visual of what was wrong. This procedure ultimately confirmed that the previously placed artificial socket was totally loose. The only option to correct the problem then became obvious, a revision procedure done by open surgery.

It was then proposed by Dr. DuBois that rather than try to cement another socket into the scapula, he would reshape the natural socket using bone grafting material. The existing ball and stem that made up the rest of the original replacement would be checked and modified to fit the reconstructed socket. The entire procedure resulted in my being in the hospital for only 24 hours during which I experienced little or no pain. Dr. DuBois was very thorough and caring throughout the entire pre- and post-surgery consultations and was completely responsive to all of my questions and concerns. The surgery appears to have been a complete success as I returned to playing golf and softball within 3 months thereafter. As of this writing, it has been 6 months and my shoulder is almost completely pain free. I have regained much of the lost strength in my right arm and I can perform all normal activities including throwing. I would certainly recommend Dr. DuBois to anyone that has a shoulder problem and I know they would be very pleased with not only his professionalism but also his personal approach.

  • left shoulder revision to a reverse total shoulder

“In December 2010 I had my left shoulder replaced. The surgery went well, but during physical therapy my rotator cuff was torn off the bone. I was not able to lift my arm and I had no external rotation. Dr. DuBois did a revision surgery to a reverse total shoulder replacement. The pain level was half of my first surgery. Dr. DuBois did not send me to physical therapy. Instead he had me do therapy at home. Before my surgery, I couldn't raise my arm and touch my head. Six months after surgery I can raise my arm above my head and I have better external rotation. I am super happy now and I appreciate all that Dr. DuBois has done.”

“I have had Dr. Dubois operate on both my right and left shoulder for a torn rotator cuff. The left shoulder being far worse than the right. The surgeries went well, the care beyond anything I could have asked for. Dr. Dubois and the staff's care and concern were nothing short of perfection. I can not praise Dr. Dubois and his staff enough. I strongly recommend Dr. Dubois to anyone having shoulder problems.”
